Project Proposal

The other weekend I attended a concert with the extended family at Lake Mission Viejo. It one of those picnic-blanket outdoor concert affairs. The main event didn’t start until after dark. We had already been there hours. The singer was Glen Campbell, and I really didn’t know anything about him except that he was the “Rhinestone Cowboy” singer. Not my kind of music, but it was enjoyable enough when all was said and done. Why is this important? The most amusing things at that concert for everybody sharing my blanket space actually came from my Droid. Even my grandmother and my step-aunt’s father were amused when I busted out the BroStache app from Geico. Pretty amazing. The darn thing lip synced along with the music even from as far away as we were sitting.

I downloaded a lighter app that was pretty impressive in its application of all the “real-life” aspects – it was a perfect example of a UI that supports physical interaction in a way that mimics real life. You could choose a lighter type, then you had to flip the lid, strike the flame, and the flame moved with the movement of the phone. It had my family in stitches, and it was fun and completely intuitive.

For my project concept, I’m still trying to think about exactly what it is I want it to be, but I know that I want to use smart phone technology to create a simple app, like one of the above mentioned, that would mimic something tangible – preferably a cliché – and therefore augment the reality of our expressing emotions. Something between a BroStache and a lighter at a concert. I am currently considering creating a FacePalm app in particular. I find it is painful to do a FP in real life if you get too enthusiastic. I picture a user choosing from a few different styles – the Papal Palm, the Homer, the Face Pawlm, one hand or two, and of course, the Jean-Luc Pic-Palm. The user controls the motion by their phone’s sensors. The phone feels it, not your face. You may also get a choice between having the face in question as a backdrop or just having the palm on its own so you can bring it to your face. The app could perhaps be expanded to include other emoticon-type memes, but for now I think I would like to focus on this aspect and develop something that works.
